Brown Whakahuia

This finely carved Wakahuia (Treasure Box) was painted from an original piece carved in the Rotorua district about 180 years ago. Representing marriage and birth. It was filled with fine food and berries and used on special occasions. The bowl sitting on the back of a Kuri (dog) is a very high symbol to Maoridom with the two guardians holding up the sun.
