South Island Kaka

The Kaka was prized for its beautiful red feathers which were used by Maori to decorate cloaks. This is a South Island Kaka, being larger than its northern cousin, and is distinguished from the North Island kaka by the white on its head. This kaka portrayed in this painting was seen on Stewart Island.
